I bowed, to the world, and said hello
Respectfully held my head down low
Started to learn, all I could
Behaved just like, they said I should
Respectfully held my head in class
Played kiss chase all over the grass
Listened real well, took it all in
Learnt the words, so I could win

the Texan Curse
I learnt the maths, so I could add
I took ‘em away to show my dad
Showed my mum how to multiply
Used the club book, so she could buy
She got a brand new HF forty two
An’ a colour telly, so we could watch that too
Down to Boots, for a set of blue glasses
So I could clearly see, in all my classes
An’ through those glasses I could also see
A cowboy chewing chocolate on the TV
Yeah, it was a Texan Bar, “a mighty chew” And I wanted one, before I grew
And it was out one day, I clearly saw
A lush Texan bar, I couldn’t ignore
In Turner’s shop, pleading to leave
That’s when I first, learnt to thieve
3.
4.
Oh yes, they didn’t teach that, in my school But I knew the maths, didn’t add up at all
No pocket money, so I couldn’t pay
About 12p, I just knew he couldn’t stay
Through my glasses he looked blue to me
I knew I had to set him free
I saw Bold Eagle, falling down
Took my chance, didn’t hang around
5.
But, I didn’t realise, at the time
The words I learnt, were like a rhyme
Simply spoke and simply said
Restricted codes, that’s what I read
But of all those words, one sticks out
The one you need, after a clout
The one which shows, you understand
“Nick the Texan, I’ll give you the man”
6.
That word is “sorry”, can be hard to say When your Texan bar, gets in the way When you don’t believe, in what it means All the way through, your restricted teens I just couldn’t say sorry, my last stand “Ok, f**k it, well, now you’re banned”
That made me angry, it made me worse
I guess you could call it, the Texan curse
7.
And that curse lasted, for quite some time I’d take what I want, it was rightfully mine Snip the tags, right off the clothes
Then walk right out, and nobody knows Nick some records, just out of view
To play on the HF forty two
Elvis’ 20 Greatest Hits, it warped in the sun Just before, ‘I Got Stung’
8.
Only, I didn’t get stung, too many times
And at least I was dressed, right up to the 9's But, they stopped making Texans, so what to do?
I asked myself, what else I could chew
Didn’t feel great, ‘bout stealing no more
Stopped there and then, complied with the law
Turned my new leaf, started on new roads Started learning elaborate codes
9.
Went to Uni, and got a degree
Read about stuff like hegemony
An’ give me the boy, I’ll give you the man Well I’m gonna change that, if I can
Used my degree, to get a good job
But in the office, there’s always a knob Used elaborated codes, to flex his might But restricted code, silenced that shite
10.
Offered to shove, a Texan in his jaw
That shut him up, and I heard no more
I did that job, for a good five years
Got us a mortgage, gone the arrears
Settled down, in a family home
Missus and kids, with space to roam
I tell the kids, ‘bout when I was young
The things I nicked, and when I got stung
11.
I tell them about, my Texan chum
How the knob and Bold Eagle, came undone And about restricted and elaborate codes
And how they help you onto different roads Turned the Texan curse, into a charm
Locked in my heart, to keep them from harm
I can even say sorry, though not very often
But the ‘mighty chew’, over time might soften
12.
And before I knew it, I awoke much older
Saw my first 50 years, right over my shoulder
I could still see the boy, all restricted
An’ it isn’t the man, most predicted
For the man today, a law abiding earner
Who would candidly go, and ask Mr. Turner “Excuse me sir, I have the money in my hand
A Texan please, if I’m not still banned!”
(if they were still made of course...ha, ha, ha)
These lyrics are about...how stealing can start...and become a habit...and how it can all change just like that!, wm
