original lyrics about a boy growing up in the 70s

Don’t you assault me, it’s not my fault see

Cos I grew up in the 70’s, learnt all about the birds and the bees

I played with guns and played with knives, an the big boys gave me a bunch of fives

If I looked without asking, or I thought I was hard enough

If I looked without asking, was the same for all of us

and hey, this was way, back when

boys would be boys, and men would be men

we weren’t cancelled out for saying this and that  Humpty Dumpty was allowed to be fat

n' Big Daddy was the diplomat

and, oh, how’s its changed since then

In school they couldn’t teach me, but outside was easy to reach me

Learning lessons not from Socrates, but from the socio inequalities

Knew no better, sort of paralysed, internal prisons don’t allow no cries

Couldn’t cry without asking, case they thought I wasn’t hard enough

Couldn’t cry without asking, was the same for all of us

Wan’ ed to be some body, maybe Muha’  mmad Ali

But white n’ black didn’t mix with ease, had much more chance turning Japanese

An’ at the time I didn’t realise, what I should a’ seen with my own two eyes

but if I looked without asking, or I thought I was hard enough

I couldn’t look without asking, was the same for all of us

Now in full transparency, I can see things more clearly

I’ve drank a few of life’s remedies, made it all the way to twenty twenty

an’ I find it easier to recognise, all the big boy’s spin and the big boy’s lies

an I can look without asking, I don’t need to be hard enough

I can cry without asking, getting better for some of us

Kendo Na’ ha’ ga’ saki, n’ the big ol’ Daddy

Gripped up in the Nelson squeeze, or a figure 4 ripping out my knees

Playground scraps didn’t take no dives, used my fists and learnt how to survive

case I looked without asking, case I thought I was hard enough

case I looked without asking, was the same for all of us

if i looked without asking

These lyrics are about...well...they're fairly transparent I guess, and there was this unwritten rule...as a kid...that you couldn't look at someone without asking...cos' you were...in fact...'asking' for a smacking! wm
